Speedoc offers normal and Premium RTK-Antigen and PCR swab tests.

What other different types of COVID-19 tests do the Malaysian government require?

There are a variety of different COVID-19 tests available in the market, however, the most common tests performed in Malaysia are RTK-antigen and PCR swab tests, otherwise known as diagnostic tests.

Diagnostic tests for COVID-19, including RTK-antigen and PCR swab tests, will show positive results only if said patients have an active infection of COVID-19.

Antibody tests, on the other hand, may be positive if you have had past COVID-19 infections.

What is the difference between COVID-19 RTK-Antigen & PCR swab tests?

The main difference between PCR and RTK-antigen COVID tests lies on what the tests identify. While the PCR swab test identifies the viruses’ genetic materials, RTK-antigen finds specific protein from the virus.

Generally, the PCR swab test has a higher accuracy in detecting COVID-19 compared to RTK-antigen and is considered the standard for COVID-19 diagnosis. In some cases, RTK-antigen is preferred as it generates quicker COVID-19 tests, typically on the same day.

Please note that in some instances a negative RTK-antigen COVID-19 test may require a PCR swab test for confirmation at the discretion of the doctor.

Is COVID-19 test painful?

Patients who have undergone the nasal and throat swab COVID-19 tests typically feel some levels of discomfort during the procedure. However, our team will do their best to ensure the procedure is done in a quick and efficient manner.

How long does it take to get COVID-19 RTK-antigen & PCR swab tests results?

Turnaround time varies for different types of COVID-19 tests. Typically, COVID swab results should be ready within 48 to 72 hours after the samples are taken by our doctors. For Premium COVID-19 tests, you can expect to get your lab test results between 6 to 10 hours.

If you have urgent enquiries, please call our Patient Care Team at +60 11 4166 1178 and we’ll do our best to accommodate your needs and requests.

Can I buy COVID-19 test kit and do it myself from home?

COVID-19 test kits should only be handled, administered and processed by medical professionals only. Speedoc works closely with Malaysian Ministry of Health to ensure that every COVID-19 test adheres with the latest rules and regulations.

How accurate are different types of COVID-19 tests?

Different COVID-19 tests have different levels of accuracy, and as of now there is no test that is 100% accurate.

The Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH) has established the accuracy level of PCR COVID-19 tests to be at 98% and RTK-antigen tests at 95% to 99%. Please bear in mind that different brands of tests vary in accuracy and it also depends on the patient’s stage of infection or time of testing.

The latest COVID-19 swab tests have yielded less than 1% of false positive and false negative results; therefore, it is important to consult a doctor should a follow-up PCR swab test be necessary.

Do I need to get COVID-19 tests before travelling?

Most countries require you to perform a COVID-19 Swab test with a negative result before allowing you to enter the country. Each requirement for COVID-19 tests varies depending on the destination you’re travelling to. Please check your respective country, airline and destination latest CDC guidelines before travelling as requirements do change from time to time.

How much does COVID-19 test cost?

Speedoc charges RM 230 per person for RT-PCR swab tests, and RM130 per person for RTK-Antigen COVID-19 swab tests. Premium and Pre-Flight COVID-19 swab tests are available for RM500 onwards per person with a surcharge of RM60 per person.

What happens if I test positive for COVID-19 after the test?

If your COVID-19 test comes back positive, the Ministry of Health Malaysia and partner clinics will be notified. For your safety and depending on the severity of the symptoms, please remain in self-isolation and monitor yourself if you are asymptomatic or showing mild symptoms. Please take note of those who have come in contact with you in the last 7 days as it is highly recommended that they should get COVID-19 tests following close contact with a positive patient.

If necessary, the District Health Office (DHO) or PKD will contact you for further isolation in a COVID-19 certified hospital.
